Coverage in Detail

What's Covered, System by System

Plain-English descriptions of each major system covered under Complete Auto Protect vehicle service contract plans.

Engine Coverage

Engine coverage under a Complete Auto Protect vehicle service contract includes internal components such as pistons, rings, bearings, camshafts, crankshafts, valve trains, and oil pump assemblies. Engine coverage is included at every plan tier, making it the most universally protected system. Covered repairs apply to mechanical failures — not maintenance items like oil changes or spark plug replacement, which are wear-and-tear exclusions.

Transmission Coverage

Transmission repairs rank among the most expensive mechanical breakdowns, often running $2,000 to $5,000 or more. Coverage under a Complete Auto Protect vehicle service contract includes the transmission case and internal components — gears, shafts, torque converter, clutch packs, and electronic controls — for both automatic and manual transmissions. All three plan tiers include transmission coverage, which is one of the most common claims filed by contract holders.

Steering Coverage

Steering system coverage is available under Complete Care and Total Protection plans. This includes power steering pumps, rack and pinion assemblies, steering gearboxes, and the associated hydraulic or electronic components that allow you to control your vehicle's direction. Steering failures can be both dangerous and costly — covered repair authorization is processed through the claims team before work begins.

Electrical System Coverage

Electrical coverage is included in Complete Care and Total Protection plans and addresses the growing complexity of modern vehicles. Covered components include the alternator, starter motor, wiring harnesses, and factory-installed electronic modules. As vehicles rely on more electrical systems for safety and performance, electrical failures have become increasingly common and expensive — often topping $1,000 for a single repair.

A/C & Cooling Coverage

Air conditioning and engine cooling are covered under Complete Care and Total Protection plans. A/C coverage includes the compressor, condenser, and evaporator core. Engine cooling coverage addresses the radiator, water pump, and thermostat — components whose failure can lead to engine overheating and significantly more expensive secondary damage. Together, these systems protect both your comfort and your engine's longevity.

Brake System Coverage

Brake system coverage under Complete Care and Total Protection plans covers mechanical brake components — master cylinder, brake calipers, wheel cylinders, and hydraulic lines. Note that consumable wear items such as brake pads, brake shoes, and rotors are standard exclusions across all vehicle service contracts, as these are normal maintenance items. Coverage applies to component failures, not scheduled replacement.

What's Not Covered (Read This Before You Buy)

Every vehicle service contract has exclusions. Here are the most common ones — the same exclusions you'll find across the vehicle service contract industry:

  • Pre-existing conditions — breakdowns that existed or showed symptoms before your contract became effective
  • Wear-and-tear items — brake pads, wiper blades, tires, filters, and similar consumables that require routine replacement
  • Cosmetic damage — scratches, dents, trim pieces, upholstery, and any damage that is not a mechanical failure
  • Accident or collision damage — covered by your auto insurance policy, not a vehicle service contract
  • Neglect or abuse — damage resulting from failure to maintain your vehicle (e.g., running an engine low on oil)
  • Unauthorized modifications — aftermarket upgrades or alterations that cause or contribute to a failure
  • Repairs started without prior authorization — your shop must contact the claims team before beginning major repairs
  • Regular maintenance — oil changes, fluid flushes, spark plug replacement, and similar scheduled services

Coverage Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often about vehicle service contract coverage.

Does Complete Auto Protect cover pre-existing conditions?

Pre-existing conditions are not covered by any vehicle service contract. Coverage applies only to mechanical breakdowns that occur after the contract's effective date and any applicable waiting period. A condition that existed or showed symptoms before the contract was active is considered pre-existing and is excluded from coverage, regardless of whether it was previously diagnosed.

Does coverage include rental cars?

Many vehicle service contract plans include a rental-car reimbursement benefit when your vehicle is in the shop for a covered repair, typically subject to per-day and per-claim limits. Whether rental coverage is included depends on the plan tier you choose. Your coverage specialist will spell out the rental benefits in writing when you [get a quote](/quote), or call (844) 915-2886 to ask before you sign up.

What happens when I file a claim?

When your vehicle experiences a covered breakdown, the process has four steps. First, take your vehicle to any licensed repair facility and describe the problem to the service advisor. Second, the shop contacts Complete Auto Protect's claims team before any repairs begin to obtain pre-authorization. Third, the claims team reviews the repair and, if covered, authorizes the work and communicates directly with the shop. Fourth, once repairs are complete, you pay your deductible to the shop and the shop submits the invoice to us for the remaining covered amount.

Can I transfer coverage if I sell my car?

Yes — Complete Auto Protect vehicle service contracts are transferable to a new owner when you sell your vehicle privately, which can add to its resale value. There is typically a small administrative fee and a short transfer form to complete, and the remaining term and benefits move to the new owner. Call (844) 915-2886 when you're ready to transfer and your specialist will walk you through the steps.

Does my plan cover high-mileage vehicles?

Yes — Complete Auto Protect writes vehicle service contracts on high-mileage vehicles. The plans available depend on your vehicle's year, make, model, and current mileage at sign-up; older or higher-mileage vehicles typically qualify for powertrain-focused plans rather than the broadest [Total Protection tier](/coverage). [Get a quote](/quote) or call (844) 915-2886 to see which plans are available for your specific vehicle.

Is there a deductible?

Yes — most vehicle service contracts include a per-visit deductible that you pay directly to the repair shop at the time of service. The deductible level you choose affects your monthly cost: a lower deductible generally means a higher monthly payment, and vice versa. You'll see the deductible options available for your vehicle when you [get a quote](/quote), and you can pick the level that fits your budget.
